En 1818, Joseph Jacotot, r\u00e9volutionnaire exil\u00e9 et lecteur de litt\u00e9rature fran\u00e7aise \u00e0 l'universit\u00e9 de Louvain, commen\u00e7a \u00e0 semer la panique dans l'Europe savante. Non content d'avoir appris le fran\u00e7ais \u00e0 des \u00e9tudiants flamands sans leur donner aucune le\u00e7on, il se mit \u00e0 enseigner ce qu'il ignorait et \u00e0 proclamer le mot d'ordre de l'\u00e9mancipation intellectuelle : tous les hommes ont une intelligence \u00e9gale. Il ne s'agit pas de p\u00e9dagogie amusante, mais de philosophie et de politique. Jacques Ranci\u00e8re offre, \u00e0 travers la biographie de ce personnage \u00e9tonnant, une r\u00e9flexion philosophique originale sur l'\u00e9ducation. La grande le\u00e7on de Jacotot est que l'instruction est comme la libert\u00e9 : elle ne se donne pas, elle se prend.
